Description
In the heart of Great Britain, nestled among the rolling hills of Woking, stands the McLaren Technology Centre. A high-tech temple to speed, innovation and precision. This is where the story of Bruce McLaren began in the 1960s, a New Zealand racing driver with an unbridled desire to go faster than anyone else. He founded McLaren in 1963, with the aim not only of dominating Formula 1, but also of one day building a supercar for the road. In 1993, that dream came true for the first time with the legendary McLaren F1. But it wasn't until 2011 that the brand made its definitive entry into the world of modern road-legal supercars with a model of its own: the McLaren MP4-12C. A year later, the ultimate embodiment of speed and freedom followed with the MP4-12C Spider.
The model name may sound like a robot from a science fiction film, but each part of it has a meaning:
MP4 refers to McLaren Project 4, a designation that goes back to Ron Dennis' team (Project 4 Racing) which merged with the McLaren F1 team in the early 1980s.
The 12 is an internal performance index that reflects the ratio between power, weight, efficiency and driving dynamics.
C stands for Carbon, a reference to the ultra-light carbon fibre monocoque chassis, which was first introduced by McLaren in Formula 1.
The MP4-12C Spider could be fitted with a convertible top relatively easily.
Thanks to the carbon chassis, McLaren was able to remove the roof without compromising the structural integrity of the car.
Under the bonnet was a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine delivering 625 hp. The car accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 329 km/h, all while the retractable hardtop roof could open in just 17 seconds, even while driving at up to 30 km/h. The car's traction and balance were phenomenal, thanks in part to the ProActive Chassis Control system, which eliminated the need for traditional stabiliser bars.
Production of the MP4-12C Spider ran from 2012 to 2014. A total of approximately 3,083 Spiders were built, making the model relatively rare compared to later McLarens such as the 570S or 720S.
